About RUM

Rum for Breakfast...

Rum for Breakfast is an addictive blend of friendship, adventure and a peculiar surf ritual from Panama. A project in which the Dutch musician Machiel Scholten shows all the different sides of his colorful character. When he picks up his guitar, he writes pop songs that sound like a cool breeze on a warm day. But just as easy, he comes up with melancholic indie rock that scrapes and crackles. Though both sounds seem different, all of his songs have the same vibe as the songwriter himself: relaxed, spontaneous and intimate.

Together with his musical companion Joeri Wulffraat, Machiel is working on a debut album from his DIY-studio in hometown Rotterdam. The to-be released record will fancy listeners who like acts as Tom Misch, The Whitest Boy Alive and The National. Songs are about traveling, surfing, love affairs and meeting new people, which are brought to life by Scholten’s live band; a bunch of talented friends with whom he did several tours along the coasts of France and Spain. The group also won an audience award during the biggest music competition of Rotterdam. Now the band is looking ahead to brighter times, hitting the road with new music and a little sip of rum every now and then.

Do you want to get to know the place where ‘Rum for Breakfast’ all started?

Check out this videoclip and you’ll know! It was this very piece of paradise, in Panama where I poured my first Rum into my breakfast. More specifically, at minute 3.12 of the videoclip, you’ll see it in real-life. Thanks to Tom, who was the first ‘el pollo loco’ who had this creative idea and thanks to Joan for connecting this crazy experience to the quest of me looking for a decent artist name.

Rum for Breakfast was born!! :D

EP BordeauxRoad

After a long period of writing, recording ,finetuning, re-recording, mixing, even more finetuning and mastering, my Debut EP has finally been released!!
BordeauxRoad is the title of the EP, as this EP all started with a surf-roadtrip to the French coast, passing by at Bordeaux. I was traveling and playing together with Ken Saes, my hometown homie, who almost always plays electric guitar with me when I play somewhere.

Little did we know that this random Couchsurf-pitstop in Bordeaux would change our musical lives…… ^^

In Bordeaux we met Caroline, a Norwegian girl living and working in Bordeaux. She hosted us during that first night of our trip and she appeared to be singing very well. Like…. VERY well!! We were flabbergasted, amazed and, even more important, we felt like there was a real connection between us three.

So, what happened next? Caroline happened to have just quit her job, which meant she had a week off. Of course Caroline would join us on this surf/music-tour across the French and Spanish coast. We left just enough stuff (even the spare-tire haha) at Caroline’s place to make sufficient space for her to fit inside the car and off we went…

Here you can see a photo of Ken (center), Caroline (right) and me, taken in Bordeaux, in front of our American Stallion. I liked the organized randomness of this photo, so I decided to use it as the artwork of the EP.!

I think it perfectly catches the vibe of this trip, which has been the start of this whole journey after all :).

This musical trip was not the end of our adventure. It really was just the starting point. For me personally, it gave me the realization that a female voice is of utmost importance for delivering my musical message. Moreover, it gave me the opportunity to finally (and properly) record and release the many songs I’d written up until that day.

This all resulted in us three recording the songs we played at the French/Spanish surf-camps in a cosy studio in Holland. With the help of Rosalie and her mixing/producing/recording Jedi Master-skills, we recorded five songs in three days. For each song, we aimed at catching this live-vibe we had during that summer roadtrip, by going for ONE TAKE for each song, at which we all felt we excelled. I think you can also hear that when listening to the end result :).

There, in that studio in Kaatsheuvel, during autumn 2018, the foundations of BordeauxRoad were laid. After this, I started the process of editing, arranging, adding layers, etcetera etcetera. With the help of Rosalie (producing/mixing), Maurice (mixing/mastering) close musical friends for playing (thank you Daniel, Dennis and Niels!) and lots of feedback, the result is finally there. BordeauxRoad is alive!

I am very, very proud of the result!!
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do :).
